Oporto (Burwood Westfields): Otropo Burger

Oporto is somewhat of a third party in the veracious fast food war, supplying mid-grade fast food, admittedly with some of the best chips available at such a venue, at a reasonable price. The store is similar to most food court offerings; a modern-rustic facade opening onto a courtyard of tables and chairs that haven’t been cleaned since the paleozoic era. The Otropo burger, as with most of their menu items, is a smoky piece of grilled chicken on a soft, semi-sweet bun, topped with lettuce. That however, is where the similarities with the normal class of chicken burger end, as the Otropo burger also contains bacon, cheese and ham. This mixing of the crunchy bacon, the juicy and sweet pineapple, and the lactic tang of the cheese leads to a unique experience.

Charcoal Chickens (Victoria Ave.): Beef Burger

Unsurprisingly, location and dining experience are not the core tenets of mid-grade fast food, and Victoria Avenue Charcoal Chickens doesn’t buck the trend. The cow that died for my beef burger found itself in a sarcophagus of cardboard, covered in lettuce and barbecue sauce, and inside a lightly toasted bun. The barbecue sauce, as implied, provides a smoky tang to an otherwise mundane burger.

Lattecino: Beef Burger

Lattecino is a small cafe on the main stretch of Victoria Avenue, and features comfortable outdoor seating, a reasonably priced menu, and good coffee. Their offering; a medium-well patty with cheese, lettuce and a side serving of tomato sauce (which i believe improves the taste profile).

Dangar Island Cafe: Dangar Burger

Situated in the middle of the Hawkesbury river, Dangar Island has cultivated a close knit community, culminating in the cafe having a decidedly “local” feeling. I chose the Dangar Burger, a medium well beef patty, several leafy greens, trimmed bacon, slightly runny egg, and a mix of what i can only assume to be mayonnaise and some sweeter, homemade sauce; all in a lightly toasted brioche bun. Overall, the burger, while not necessarily a unique taste profile, is a good choice for fans of other relatively juicy burgers (grill’d, some pub burgers).
